Yes, dash cams are fully legal in the UAE. As Khaleej Times reported, Dubai Police have officially clarified that owning a dash cam is legal and no UAE law makes it a crime.

The Federal Traffic Council has confirmed that dash cams can be used legally since 2016, and authorities in all seven emirates back them for recording traffic accidents and reporting violations.

In practice, that means a few things. Dash cams are legal in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and every other emirate. They aren't mandatory, though the authorities strongly recommend them. The footage can help both you and the investigating officers after a crash, and it counts as evidence for insurance claims and police investigations. Dubai Police's "We Are All Police" initiative supports them too.

A senior Dubai Police official told The National that "drivers should use dash cams to resolve car crash disputes", because the footage helps establish what really happened.

More recently, Gulf News reported that Sharjah Police also encourage dash cams for accident disputes. They pointed to how well the footage works for deciding who was at fault and for protecting innocent drivers from false accusations.

Owning a dash cam is legal. What you do with the footage is where people get into trouble, because the UAE has strict privacy laws. According to Gulf News, breaking them can bring heavy penalties.

You're allowed to use footage to document traffic accidents, to report road violations to the authorities, to submit to police through official channels, as evidence for an insurance claim, and in legal proceedings when it's needed. That's it.

What you can't do is longer:

• Post footage on social media (Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter)
• Share videos publicly without police permission
• Use footage to defame other drivers or pedestrians
• Publish recordings that show people who can be identified
• Send videos to anyone other than the authorities

The penalties come under the UAE's cybercrimes law and penal code. You're looking at imprisonment of 6 months or more and fines from AED 150,000 to AED 500,000, with extra penalties if defamation is involved. A criminal record can also affect your residency and your job.

As Dubai OFW puts it, "violating privacy by posting pictures and videos online can result in jail time and heavy monetary fines."

UAE authorities expect accident and violation footage to come in through the proper channels. Each emirate has its own:

• Dubai: the "We Are All Police" programme in the Dubai Police app, the Al Ameen service (800 4888), or in person at a police station. Submitting within 2 hours of the incident is recommended.
• Abu Dhabi: the Abu Dhabi Police app, the traffic violations reporting hotline, or 999 in an emergency.
• Sharjah: the Sharjah Police app, the Traffic and Patrols Department, or 999 in an emergency.
• Other emirates: the local police app or hotline, or your nearest police station.

Send footage only through these channels. Never post it publicly first.

UAE heat is tough on dash cams, so a bit of routine care goes a long way.

Once a month, check the memory card, and format it every 2-3 months. Clean the lens regularly, because dust and sand build up and blur the picture. Make sure the camera really is recording, and play back a clip to check it's clear and saved properly. Look at the mount too, since heat weakens adhesive over time.
