Generator Fuel Consumption Calculator

Litres per hour by kVA and load, the monthly diesel bill at this month's UAE price — and how much of what you buy never reaches the engine.

Sites rarely run above 70%. Below 30% for long periods causes wet-stacking.

EXPECTED DIESEL BILL

AED 14,296 / month

3,325 L/month · AED 171,553/year · AED 1.15 per kWh

Invoices say one number, the tank says another. Generator monitoring logs every litre in and out, run hours and load — the gap becomes a report, not a guess.

5–15% of diesel bought for site generators is never burned in them. Enter your monthly delivered litres above to see your own gap.

  • Run hours per generator: 260 h/month → oil and filter service every 250 h ≈ 12.5 services a year each.
  • Diesel price defaults to this month's UAE rate (September 2026); bulk supply to site is usually priced differently — enter your invoice rate.

GENERATOR DIESEL

How much diesel does a generator use and how do you detect fuel theft on site?

A diesel generator burns about 0.27 litres per kWh at full load — 21.6 L/h for a 100 kVA set, 54.0 L/h for 250 kVA, 108.0 L/h for 500 kVA — and roughly half that at 50% load, since an idling engine still burns ~15% of its full-load rate. Two 100 kVA sets at 60% load for 10 hours a day, 26 days a month, use about 6,649 litres, or AED 28,592 at September 2026's UAE diesel price of AED 4.30. To detect theft, compare supplier deliveries with that expected burn: on unmetered sites 5–15% of purchased diesel is typically unaccounted for. A tank-level sensor with timestamped fill and drop events turns the gap into evidence.

Typical values; consult the engine datasheet for a specific set. Tier-3/4 engines and modern common-rail units sit at the low end; older mechanical-injection sets and 50 °C ambient at the high end. Generator Fuel — FAQ

Roughly 0.27 litres per kWh delivered at full load, so a 100 kVA (80 kW) set burns about 21.6 L/h flat out, 15.8 L/h at 75%, 10.8 L/h at 50% and 6.3 L/h at 25%. A 500 kVA set uses about 78.8 L/h at 75%. Manufacturer charts vary ±10% by engine family, altitude and ambient temperature — UAE summer heat derates output and pushes consumption to the upper end.
Fuel use does not fall to zero with load. At no load an engine still burns about 15% of its full-load rate to overcome friction and keep 1,500 rpm, and at 25% load about 28.999999999999996%. That is why cost per kWh doubles at low load — and why running a set below 30% load for long periods also causes wet-stacking (unburned fuel in the exhaust) and shortens engine life. Right-size the set or use load-sharing.
Compare litres delivered (supplier invoices) with litres the generators could physically have burned (run hours × L/h for the actual load). The gap on unmetered sites is typically 5–15% — siphoning from tanks, deliveries shorter than the invoice, and fuel diverted to private vehicles. A tank-level sensor with GPS reporting logs every fill and every drop, timestamped, so a 200-litre drop at 2 a.m. is an alert, not a month-end surprise.
Fuel level (ultrasonic or capacitive probe in the day tank and bulk tank), run hours from the alternator or ignition signal, load via a CT clamp or the controller's Modbus output, battery voltage, coolant temperature and oil pressure alarms, and location for rental units. Reports show L/h against the expected curve, litres per kWh, refuel events versus invoices, and service due by run hours — the 250-hour oil interval this calculator counts.
