FUEL THEFT DETECTION
How do you detect fuel theft from a fuel log?
Sort each vehicle's fuel-level readings by time and compare every drop with the distance driven in between. Expected burn is km × L/100 km; a drop that exceeds it by 10 L or more — and by more than half again — is a drain, not consumption. Drains with zero km moved are siphoning while parked, the most common UAE pattern (night, yard or labour-camp parking). Rises count as refuels and should match the pump receipt; a vehicle whose litres per 100 km sits 25% above the fleet median is a card-misuse or idling suspect. This tool applies those rules to any CSV in the browser; a fuel sensor on the tracker applies them every minute and alerts with location.
Five signs of fuel theft and what each looks like in the data
Last reviewed 2026-10-11. Thresholds: drain ≥ 10 L, refuel ≥ 5 L, outlier +25% — all editable.
| Pattern in the log | Usually means | How this tool shows it |
|---|---|---|
| Level drops, vehicle did not move | Siphoning from the tank while parked | Drain event with 0 km moved |
| Refuel smaller than the receipt | Partial fill, remainder sold or put in another vehicle | Compare the refuel litres with the card transaction |
| L/100 km far above the fleet median | Card misuse, AC idling, or a mechanical fault | High-consumption flag (default +25%) |
| Drop larger than distance explains while moving | Siphoning mid-trip, or a leak | Drain event with km moved shown |
| Refuels at odd hours or off-route | Fuel bought for someone else | Needs the GPS trail — see fuel monitoring |
From a monthly audit to a minute-by-minute alert
The log tells you it happened. The sensor tells you where the vehicle was when it did.
