UAE TRAFFIC FINES

What do the most common fleet traffic violations cost in the UAE?

Under the federal schedule (Ministerial Resolution No. 178 of 2017, applied under Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024): using a mobile phone while driving AED 800 and 4 black points; no seatbelt AED 400 and 4 points; tailgating AED 400 and 4 points; jumping a red light AED 1,000, 12 points and 30 days impound (AED 3,000 and one year impound for heavy vehicles); speeding from AED 300 (up to 20 km/h over) to AED 3,000, 23 points and 60 days impound (over 80 km/h); worn tyres AED 500, 4 points and 7 days; expired registration AED 500, 4 points and 7 days; a heavy vehicle outside its lane AED 1,500 and 12 points; an uncovered truck load AED 3,000. 24 black points in 12 months suspends the driver's licence. A typical 20-van fleet with six minor speeding, two phone, two seatbelt, one tailgating and one tyre violation a month pays about AED 6,900 a month — 100% of it preventable with a speed limiter, driver monitoring and an in-cab camera.

UAE Traffic Fines — FAQ

Federal speeding fines scale with how far over the limit you were: up to 20 km/h over is AED 300; 20–30 over AED 600; 30–40 over AED 700; 40–50 over AED 1,000; 50–60 over AED 1,500 with 6 black points and 15 days impound; 60–80 over AED 2,000 with 12 points and 30 days; more than 80 over AED 3,000 with 23 points and 60 days. Abu Dhabi enforces its posted limits with no buffer; Dubai radars are set with a small margin. Fleet vehicles fitted with an RTA-approved speed limiter physically cannot reach the top three tiers.
Black points are recorded against the driver's licence (the driver, not the company) when the fine is paid and stay on record for 12 months. Reaching 24 points within a year suspends the licence for three months the first time, six months the second and a year with a re-test the third. For a fleet, a suspended driver is a parked vehicle — the calculator flags when your monthly points would put the average driver over the limit.
Camera and radar fines are registered against the vehicle, so the company as registered owner must pay them before the vehicle's registration can be renewed; most employers then recover the amount from the driver under the employment contract. Black points are attached to the driver who was identified. Impoundment applies to the vehicle regardless of who was driving — for heavy vehicles some violations carry a one-year impoundment, which is the largest single cost on this page.
The fines schedule is federal (Ministerial Resolution No. 178 of 2017, applied under Federal Decree-Law No. 14 of 2024 which came into force on 29 March 2025), so the amounts here apply across the UAE. Emirates add local rules on top — Dubai Police impound release fees of AED 10,000–100,000 for the most serious offences, Abu Dhabi's stricter speed enforcement and periodic discount schemes on old fines. Always confirm the current figure on the Dubai Police, Abu Dhabi Police or MOI app before paying.
Each violation has a specific in-vehicle countermeasure: a speed limiter caps the vehicle below the fine tiers that carry black points and impoundment; driver behaviour monitoring scores speeding, harsh braking and tailgating per driver so coaching targets the right people; an AI driver monitoring camera detects phone use, no seatbelt and distraction in real time and alerts the driver before the road camera does; a dash camera provides evidence to contest wrongly attributed fines; and maintenance and document reminders stop expired registration, worn tyres and failed lights. Fleets that combine these typically cut fines by 40–60% within six months.
